The Atrium Building provides 153 mixed tenure new homes over 10 stories alongside the busy A13, a major arterial road connecting London to eastern England. This was the flagship building within the wider East City Point Development in East London and was also the largest and most technically challenging. It’s a building of two halves, with the north side aligned closely to the road but protected from traffic noise, pollution and weather by a naturally ventilated fully glazed atrium containing walkways, exotic planting and coloured lighting. The south side is predominantly brick, enabling residents to enjoy sunshine and views away from the busy road. The building also included the East City Point Energy Centre, which was built first and had to be kept in operation throughout. The project won the UK National LABC award for “Best High-Volume Residential Scheme” in 2018. I was Project Director, steering the project through a revised concept design and planning application in 2012/13 followed by technical design through to handover in 2017.
